Raffle Fundraising: Why It’s Usually the Best Idea on This List
You’ve looked at duck races, auctions, and everything else on this site. Here’s the honest case for why a raffle usually wins on effort versus dollars raised, and how to pick the right format for your group.

The case for raffles, plainly
Most fundraising ideas ask a lot of your volunteers for a modest return. A raffle flips that math. One good prize, a few weeks of ticket selling, and a drawing at the end usually clears more than a month of bake sales or a whole semester of spirit wear sales, and it takes a fraction of the ongoing effort once your group has run one before.
It also works for almost every group on this site. Schools sell tickets at pickup. Churches sell them after service. Booster clubs sell them at every game. You don’t need a venue, a caterer, or a special skill. You need a prize worth wanting and a way to sell tickets, online or in person.
Raffle rules aren’t the same everywhere. Some states require a permit, some cap prize values, and a few restrict raffles to registered nonprofits only. None of that is hard to work through, but check your state and local rules before you set a date and print tickets. It’s a lot easier to ask first than to unwind a raffle after the fact.
Which raffle format fits your group
Raffle isn’t one thing. Here’s how the three main formats tend to sort themselves out by group.
Basket Raffle
Themed prize baskets, usually tied to an in-person event like a gala or a school carnival. A natural fit for civic clubs and school PTAs that already have an event on the calendar.
50/50 Raffle
Half the pot goes to the winner, half to your cause. Simple to explain, quick to run, and an easy add-on to an event you’re already hosting.
Progressive Raffle
Queen of Hearts uses weekly drawings where the jackpot grows until someone selects the right card. Built for groups that want a recurring reason for supporters to come back every week.
Four formats. Four very different fundraisers.
The right format depends on whether you have one prize or twenty, a one-night event or a weekly crowd, and whether the excitement happens online or in front of a room.
Traditional Raffle
Best when you have one headline prize, a clear closing date, and supporters who already understand exactly what a raffle is.
Good fit:Churches · nonprofits · schools
Basket Raffle
Best when you have a room full of donated prizes and supporters want to choose which baskets their tickets go into.
Good fit:Schools · churches · galas
50/50
Simple pitch, easy prize math, and a natural fit for crowds already gathered around a game, dinner, meeting, or community event.
Good fit:Sports · civic clubs · events
Queen of Hearts
A progressive weekly format built for repeat participation and a jackpot that grows until the Queen is selected.
Good fit:Churches · clubs · recurring crowds
