School Fundraising Ideas That Don’t Burn Out Your PTA
Nobody wants another wrapping-paper catalog season. Here’s what actually raises money for a school without asking the same five parent volunteers to do all the work again.

What’s different about fundraising for this group
A school PTA or booster club answers to a principal or district office before it answers to anyone else. Whatever you run needs a quick yes from whoever signs off on fundraisers, it needs to fit inside a school-year calendar, and it needs adults handling the money and the prizes even when students are the ones selling.
The other real constraint is volunteer burnout. The same three or four parents run everything at most schools. Whatever idea you pick, spread the workload or you’ll be back here next year looking for new volunteers instead of a new idea.
Ideas worth your time
Raffles
Easy to run at pickup, a game night, or a school event. One raffle usually clears more than a whole semester of catalog sales.
Online auctions
Teacher experiences and local business gift cards do well here. Runs itself online for two weeks with almost no event day at all.
Fun runs and walk-a-thons
A peer-to-peer pledge event that gets the whole school moving. Good fit when your community responds better to a cause than a catalog.
Get the fundraiser approved before you get attached to it. Most districts want a heads-up on anything involving a prize, cash handling, or students selling door to door, and finding that out after you’ve already ordered prizes is a bad afternoon. A five-minute conversation with the office up front saves the whole thing.
If you only run one thing this year, run a raffle
Of everything on this page, a raffle asks the least of your volunteers and usually raises the most. See why a raffle is usually the best idea on this list, or jump straight in.
